Closeup on OMP Hot Model Tara

Tara (OMP Model #383649) enjoyed her reign as the OMP Hot Model of the Week so much, she wanted to share some insights into her career and advice for fellow models. As you can tell from the interview below, her natural beauty is matched with a bright outlook and an awesome sense of humor.

OMP: How long have you been modeling?

TARA: I’ve been modeling for almost two years now and loving every minute of it!

OMP: How did you get your start as a model?

TARA: I was my uncle's guinea pig when he started getting into photography when I was 12 which peaked my interest in it. Then, when I was 18 I went with a friend to her photoshoot as the chaperon and was asked to come back.

OMP: How do you describe yourself as a model?

TARA: Spunky? Feisty? Comical? Serious, determined, energetic and collaborative? lol. I have been called a lot of names. (All good, though!)

OMP: What are some of your favorite shoots and/or credits?

TARA: Favorites are all of them! But I have discovered a new passion for travel! I have been to the mountains of Tennessee, Florida and Lake Michigan to shoot with Robert / RNB2 Photography(62600). Outside of working with him my favorite was recently I spent a month north of L.A. on a project. Favorite credits? Image of the day! Numerous Showcases here on OneModelPlace of course! Featured on radio station and magazine websites, but my biggest credit so far..... I am not allowed to talk about yet!

OMP: How do you prepare for a photo shoot?

TARA: I think it depends on what the goal is. Some shots have been a matter of throwing on an outfit and a little make up and we are ready to go. Other have been a little bit of set up. (Milk is cold to lay in and cereal makes a mess of your tub!) I like to think I can pull off any mood for a shot, and I have done my best to try different expressions and bring a different feel to each shot I am asked to do.

OMP: What do you concentrate on during a shoot?

TARA: Keeping my tongue in my mouth. Don't laugh! Ok, laugh, it is funny though.

OMP: What are the rewards and challenges of modeling?

TARA: The challenges are sifting through all of the "I will make you famous" offers I get. The rewards? Too many to list! Money, great shots, increasing popularity, money and ultimately..... fame. (Stay tuned for more news. lol)

OMP: What advice do you have for models just starting out?

TARA: CHECK REFERENCES! I heard this a lot when I was first starting and it has saved me a lot of grief. I have heard so many stories about models wasting their time with this photographer and that photographer. Ladies, take the time to check references and you will save yourself a lot of grief. (Photographers check references of models too!)

OMP: How did you discover One Model Place?

TARA: Before working with RNB2, he sent me the link to his profile here. Once I had a couple good shots, I made a profile here too.

OMP: How has OMP helped your career?

TARA: I must say, I have been discovered here. And it is a great place to see a professionals work!

OMP: Anything else you would like to add?

TARA: I have only been modeling for a couple years. I am hoping things are about to break for me and I am so happy that I have stayed passionate about it. Each and every shoot I pour 100% of myself into it.

Prolific Jon Barry Takes Artistic Approach to Photography

Prolific photographer Jon Barry (OMP Member #41308) has practically filled up his One Model Place portfolio with Showcase Images – an achievement that has only been reached once before in the history of the website. OMP got a chance to catch up with Jon to discuss his artistic technique and philosophy, as well as his new OMP portfolio featuring his children’s photography (OMP #41309)

OMP: What is your artistic background?

JON BARRY: I have been a photographer of sorts ever since my college days. I was a fine arts major in college, and became a watercolorist of note in New Orleans. My uncle, Adolf "Buby" Huye, was a commercial artist, and back then during the 1960s, when I was in my late teens and early twenties, I used to do architectural renderings for him and other architects. Once I started painting watercolors, Winslow Homer became my idol. I was out everyday sketching and finally I decided I just could not do the sketches fast enough and bought a decent 35mm camera to help my process. Photography was not my thing -- painting was -- and I only took photos in slides so I could project them and use them as the basis for the landscapes of my work.

When I went to Viet Nam, I had little time to paint, but taking photos was something that was always available. I bought a Miranda camera (obviously I was influenced by the naked glamour girl they had in their ads) along with a complete set of lens and gear. While there in Viet Nam, I took well over 4,000 slides. Though over the years I had a few jobs, art was always at the forefront, and photography was always a tool.

OMP: How did you make the transition into photography?

JON BARRY: Getting into photography as a profession did not happen until I started manufacturing theatrical makeup. My brother and I had an engineering firm, and I was basically the salesman. I was an art major, not an engineer. I had been bodypainting girls for years, and we batched up a bodypaint mixture that was to revolutionize the makeup market for movies and MTV videos, which became popular in the early ’80s. A friend told us that we should market our makeup, so we set out in a rented apartment and bottled the stuff. We were smart -- we put the words “safe” and “non-toxic” on the bottles. I went to a few department store chains with a female friend, we did a few demos, and they bought it. Additionally at that time another thing happened -- TV got into selling items live on the air. We found a couple of these channels, and wound up selling products that we did not even have. Then the FDA shut us down, yanked the product we had delivered out of the stores, and told us we had to do testing. With this setback, and the knowledge that the product was a winner, I set about designing products and doing the photography for the products. Within a couple of years, I started a prepress business to do the color separations for our business as well as that for other advertising firms, printers and graphic designers -- all at the onset of the digital explosion. We hired a staff photographer as well, and the two of us began shooting commercial work.

OMP: Tell us about how you first discovered and signed up for One Model Place back in 2003.

JON BARRY: When the prepress business got soft and the printers started buying the same equipment as we were using and giving away the same type of products we were selling for free, the handwriting was on the wall. We had sold the makeup business, Generik, Ink, Inc. and the brand “Why Not Party” to Libby Lee Toys out of Cincinnati, Ohio in 1989. I totally concentrated on the prepress, Image 4 Prepress, Inc, and our business in that was great. We had two staff photographers as well as me, and we were very advanced in the digital graphics and the commercial field as we were using Photoshop before the Knoll Brothers went with Adobe, Inc. We were doing retouching as far back as 1985, and now were beta developers for Adobe, as well as a dozen other software companies.

We became a dealer for Kodak to sell their digital cameras and worked out an arrangement with Leaf Systems before it was bought by American Scitex, to also use their camera systems, so we were taking digital photos before almost anyone. At this time there was an explosion of the Internet, and the force that was driving the Internet was the porn and glamour industry. When our business was declining for prepress as the printers were doing their own, we started scanning the rolls of film that the porn sites would get and we soon learned who was shooting the models. I was not really interested in porn, but rather I liked working with models to shoot artistic nudes. I still loved bodypainting and was always in need of models. One of the girls whom I had photographed (Stacy Lynn, who is no longer modeling) suggested that I join One Model Place because there were lots of models there. I did, and have never looked back.

OMP: How has One Model Place helped you promote your career over the past seven years?

JON BARRY: Commercial work has always been my mainstay, I was always in it through the makeup and the prepress business and knew the clients. But I also began doing well during the explosion of the models on the Internet. OMP offered me a way to find additional models that before might not have been available. At that time we had quite a few models in our area and back then they were very anxious to get work and since we were selling the photos we could afford to pay the models. The work got progressively better through 2005.

After Hurricane Katrina things changed here in Baton Rouge for us and we lost population due to the destruction caused by the storm. However, I had a good port on OMP and a few dance clubs noticed my work and I began to shoot for them as well. I was also doing calendars and was always in need of models and they were available through OMP and would come in from other areas. But even though I was not getting the same number of models from OMP, my portfolio was still being viewed and I got jobs from it.

OMP: Tell us the stories of your first Showcase image, and your most recent Showcase image.

JON BARRY: The truth is, I have no idea when the first Showcase image was selected. I really did not pay that much attention to it. I started off right away with a Platinum Plus account, and back then it only allowed 300 images. I was using the portfolio more for the ability to find models, and was not too concerned with Showcases. I am sure that back then I deleted them just like I would delete other images. They were not featured on our ports like they are now... with the bars across the page showing those that we have received as well as those on models' pages that we are linked to. When I first noticed them, they just had this little bar saying "Showcase." They happened when they happened. Probably over the years I have deleted well over 50 of them.

It was not until I noticed the affect that they had on hits to my account that I gave them any value. How can I tell a story about my most recent. I get one almost every day now. In fact, I am faced with deleting about 250 of them because now my port is filled with them. I started another One Model Place portfolio just for children (OMP #41309), and moved all those photos to that port. Even with doing that the port filled up, and it is easily possible that by the time anyone reads this, I will have deleted all 250. However, I made a link of the Showcases I have at present before their deletion, and that link is available on my port for viewing.

OMP: What advice do you have for OMP models?

JON BARRY: You know, we photographers have more longevity on OMP than the models do. They get older, have children, get married, and do not feel like being models anymore -- so most models have a lifespan that is limited. The great ones, well naturally they are still there. The biggest problem with models is they want it to be a dream, and they work with you and then they do not work with anyone else. Communications has always been their weak spots, but if the models want to really be successful, all they have to do is be good communicators, respond to emails and never be late or stand anyone up. Being good looking is truly secondary to being clean, punctual, and a good listener.

OMP: What advice do you have for photographers who are just starting out?

JON BARRY: I have watched Photoshop become ever so much more important than the camera to the shooters. My suggestion is to forget for the most part that Photoshop exists and concentrate on making the photos that are taken as good as possible when shot, so that little Photoshop work is necessary. I also think that the editing work by so many is overdone. I find that too many photographers have stopped worrying about their color and white balance, just being lazy and shooting raw which gives you a much greater color range, and correcting the files after the fact. But all this does is make the photographer even more of a slave to the computer and less available out in the field.

Further, I find that few photographers understand light at all. I think more attention should be paid as to where the light is coming from, what happens to it when it hits a surface, and learn how to shoot both inside and outside.

Lastly, stop worrying about protecting the images with large branding and providing tiny files to the models because of the worry that someone is going to steal the file. Be prolific, shoot more often. Shoot good headshots of the models that you do TFP with, and stop Photoshopping the models to the point where they do not look like themselves. This is great for the photographer's port, but the other photographers who want to hire this fictitious person would sure like to know what the model looks like. We might not like the person created in Photoshop, we want the real person. Also, stop putting hours and hours into the retouching of photos, and spend more time learning the camera, the light, and the framing. Make the photos good from the get-go and please, please give the models more images at a higher resolution.

Saraa is the OMP Rising Star of the Week

Saraa (OMP Model #372654) started modeling about two years ago. In that short time, she has accomplished quite a lot. She got her start as a hairshow model, has appeared in magazines and ad campaigns, and most recently placed third in the country in the Runway Magazine National Model Search.

A photographer that Saraa worked with suggested she join One Model Place, and ever since then the site has been extremely helpful for her career. "I have been able to network with so many people…and so much of my work has been seen because of my profile. I have even made a couple of great friends since I began on OMP. I am so thankful to the administrators on OMP for their interest in my work."

Saraa describes herself as "easy to work with, enthusiastic and I have been told that I can pull off many different looks. My favorite shoots are themed shoots, particularly vintage style."

She prepares for photo shoots in this way. "I always make sure I get lots of sleep the night before, that my hair is clean and my nails are perfect. And I bring lots of food!"

The rewards and challenges of modeling for Saraa are many. "The greatest reward of modeling for me is working with all of the people involved in a shoot. The greatest challenge for me has been making sure that I eat enough food during the shoots to keep up my energy!"

She has some good advice for models trying to break into the industry. "My best advice would be to stay positive and just keep on doing test shoots. You can never have too much practice and it’s great experience to learn to work with everyone involved." Her personal goals as a model include some day making a living as a print model.

Steven Ruegnitz Dedicates His Career to the Study of the Female Form

Steven Ruegnitz (OMP Member #216516) has almost four decades of experience in the field of photography. His earliest experience taking photos as a student led to his long-term career.

"I knew in high school that my primary life subject was going to be women. A dear friend of mine knew of my interest and stepped up to allow me to shoot her. I am sad to say that I look back and I did a terrible job, but she was a great friend and knew it was part of helping me grow. I did make it up to her in later years!"

Soon after, Steven became aware of Peter Gowland and his work. "He was one of the few photographers who had published books and posing guides in glamour and nude photography. I purchased his books and studied everything he wrote and every image I could find that he made. While he taught seminars, the cost was far out of reach for me in those days. Yet he was a major influence on my early work. I went on to shoot portraits for friends and family to pay for the equipment, and then did a few weddings as well. All of that was to pay for the ability to go back to what I wanted to shoot."

In college, he entered the Journalism department as a broadcasting major. "While radio was my field, all of us had to have formal photography training. Our professor was a Brooks Institute Graduate and scared us all because she was such a tough critic. I was called in to see her one day, and in terror I was prepared to have some still life work that I had produced for her class torn apart. Instead the lecture was 'Why have you not become part of the photo concentration, what the heck are you doing in broadcasting?' As surprised as I was, it was to late for a change, but I went back for her coaching many times in the years after graduation. Past that, I tried to read everything that was published -- long before the Internet was a tool -- and shoot as often as I could."

Steven utlizes high-key photography techniques in his work. "For the majority of women, it can be very beautiful. When properly framed, it also supports image use in commercial work. If you use negative space or off-center positioning, you can leave space for commercial copy so an image can do multiple functions. In the last couple of years, I have spent time with Bill Lemon (OMP Member #4278), who has dragged me out of the studio to learn how to shoot in the great outdoors and in a variety of locations. I was spoiled by the control of the studio and it took a bit of getting over that, but now I love to work on location. I have found that I am working to expand out of what I have classically shot and at the encouragement of a number of models, I have been moving into areas I have not really worked with in the past. Recently I have really enjoyed the creative energy and ideas from some of the talented ladies I have worked with."

He has an eye for glamour nude talent. "I start with a view that I love to shoot woman of all ages. I love to shoot models who have some life experience and frequently are moms and wives and who routinely tell me they have horrible stretch marks, sagging, or are otherwise somehow complaining about what the years have done. It is fun to work with them, as they tend to be more self-assured and comfortable with their bodies and are willing to work and be creative. When they DO come out looking better than they somehow thought possible, there is just such a great positive energy you get from the process. At the other end, I have a view of a 'pay it forward' from the gift my friend gave to me when I was first shooting. So I am willing to take on completely inexperienced but 'dying to get started and full of energy' young women."

Steven is a firm believer that glamour and nude work starts with a model's eyes. "When you see cell phone photos that are just horrible that are posted by a newbie, I find that I look right through the image and look at the eyes. Does that person seem to 'have it' in the connection, so that I think I can help them build a port to get them going? It tends to be more work since you have to be photographer, coach, mentor, and sometimes manager. That said, if you can really help somebody get going, you can take great reward from knowing you started them in a good direction. Maybe they will not turn professional, but they will have had a great experience and have some images that will be part of their life forever."

He points out that in between those two segments are a great many very dedicated and skilled models that are either full-time professional (making their living from it) or semi-pro and have a substantial body of work. "It is here where the creative energy is just amazing. I look for models who WANT to be part of the creative process. Not just 'show up and tell me what to do' - I like models who bring ideas or try new things. I also like what I would call 'low drama' models. Just down to earth woman who love the creative process and get as much joy out of being in front of the lens as I do being behind it. When the process works well with seasoned models, I like to edit in a way that I won't with a beginner. A seasoned model can be self-critical (not in a bad way) and reflect on the fact that an expression or pose in one fame is just a small bit off the frame next to it and make the call as to the better image. A model with substantial experience may say, 'I don't like whatever it is, but I know you will take that out in the finished image.' This contrasts greatly with others who instantly 'go for the flaw' and can't reflect on what the rest of the image or what it could be. In the end, I work with all three segments; it is just I have different expectations for each, but they are all fun and provide a lot of creative energy."

In a beginner, Steven feels that there tends to be lots of questions even before one gets to the discussion involving images. "In this case, I find that the number one thing I start with is establishing TRUST. A model who arrives unsure of the situation will look tense in the images and nobody wins. If they are local I will invite them over before the shoot just to meet and greet and see first hand the studio location. Then we can get to the discussion of the session itself. I set expectations on how much time (typically three to four hours on a beginner shoot) and I know they will not have a lot of view as to clothing choices so I encourage them to 'bring it all' so I can help pick with them. I then try to run them through a range of things from good head shots to a variety of other styles based on the person and what we have to work with. With a seasoned model, it is frequently the case that the model will say, "I would like to try..." and we will go from there. Since this is my 'art,' I am quite relaxed. Frequently we will share images that portray a style, location or approach that best attempt to tell what we are trying to describe better than words can. This back and forth frequently goes on with lots of email sharing and finally phone calls as we zero in on the shooting day. Of course if it's intended to be an outdoor shoot, you always need a 'B' plan in case the weather turns against you. What could you do that differs from what you intended if Mother Nature does not cooperate?"

The artist discovered One Model Place through a family friend. "The friend just starting in modeling, and I have known since she was a baby in my arms was at Thanksgiving dinner with our family. She said to me, 'Why don't you have a port on OMP?' 'What is OMP?' I asked. She led me to the nearest computer and took me to the site and suggested -- no, PUSHED -- me to take the step to put up some of my work. I confess to being hesitant, but I took her advice and the rest is history."

Steven relates that One Model Place has been a terrific showcase for his work. "OMP has also helped me connect with very talented photographers and models. I believe I first ran into Bill Lemon's work on this site and Bill, after working with me, pushed me to move from just a basic beginner port into embracing the site and really getting serious about working with it. Models I met through Bill's workshop were always on OMP as well, and they wanted me to post work we did together here. So I would say it came from all directions, and it has been nothing but a positive experience."

He prides himself on having been a "film guy" with a Nikon F2AS and Hasselblad medium format film cameras, but he recently made the switch to digital. "My primary camera is a Nikon D300 with a Nikon D200 for backup. I typically use Nikon 18 - 200mm or Nikon 70 -200 lens as the usual tools with other lens available. In the studio I use a Speedotron Black Line multi-light system. I am a big fan of the Chimera soft boxes as my favorite main and fill lights for studio work. On location when traveling light, I use the Nikon SB 800 speed light. If I can drive to the location I will carry Alien Bee 800s with a variety of light modification tools. The Alien Bee product line has a great portable battery pack known as the Vagabond II which allows the use of a high power strobe in a location that has no access to power which is just a great tool for working in the field."

He recently traveled from New Jersey to Florida for a series of shoots. "There is no question that pools and beaches are just "standard fare" for Florida. In New Jersey you will find models who have literally ONE bikini. That does not seem to be an issue with Florida where no matter if your choice is swimming pools or beaches the common theme is WATER. I look forward to being able to take advantage of that in ways that were difficult to impossible in New Jersey."

For photographers just starting out, Steven offers the following advice. "Find a photographer or two whose work you admire and study it. There are lots of basic books that can take you what ever direction you might like to go. Go back and look at Peter Gowland's work to see what 'classic' styles looked like. Beyond that, treat EVERY interaction with a model, MUA with a view that 'you only have one chance to make a great first impression.' You need to check your ego at the door and be completely professional. Everyone talks and if you treat somebody poorly, no matter the reason, it will hurt you for a long time to come. Never chastise a model in a public forum. If you have something appropriately critical to say, make it polite, professional AND IN PRIVATE! Be as accepting of people coaching you as you do with others. Make sure that every single model you shoot will feel so good about the interaction with you that they would be happy to be a reference for you to anyone who would ask. Integrity is everything! Shoot every chance you get with every person that is willing to shoot with you. Every shoot will teach you something and help improve your skill. And have fun!"

Steven adds that one extra benefit of being in this industry is the chance to make lifelong acquaintances. "I have found that over a very long time shooting that the side benefit of it all is that you wind up making some great friends through it all. You may well start as Photographer/Model and wind up Friend/Friend and that's a great feeling."

Sabrina Maree is OMP's Hot Model of the Week!

Check out California girl Sabrina Maree, who has already been featured as a Playboy model and is sure to set hearts racing whenever she gets in front of the camera! She started pursuing a modeling career when she was 19, and has been working steadily for the past three years. She describes herself as "a glamour model/nude model. I loved being primped and sexy!"

Sabrina Maree's first real job was for Playboy. "I attended a casting call in San Mateo and received a call back a month or two later. I shot for their Special Editions, their 'Busty Babes' site, and 'Real American Girls.'

Another of her favorite shoots took place recently with the mother-daughter team of Suze and Holly Randall. "I am loving the results of that shoot. One set is out so far on HollyRandall.com. Suze is really such a legend in erotica, and her daughter Holly is just as talented. I've done a few other things recently, but I don't want to talk about them until they are published."

She joined One Model Place years ago when a friend of hers started modeling and suggested it. "OMP has lead to many contacts that led to paid jobs, even a bodypainting job at the Playboy mansion!"

The brunette beauty lists the rewards and challenges of modeling. "The rewards are innurmerable... travel, meeting people, and experiencing things I might never otherwise. Also, dozing in the MUA's chair, I love that! The challenges involve keeping healthy when you are working in close contact with lots of people -- cold and flu season hasn't been easy on the industry this year. And of course, the perception of the people around me of what I do."

Sabrina Maree offer the following advice for models just starting out. "Don't jump into anything or pigeonhole yourself before you really see your options spread out and you pick your direction instead of falling into it. Don't be afraid to turn down shoots that make you uncomfortable, no matter the pay." for models who want to become published in magazines, she adds, "Aim for shooting with the greats in your field of choice or talent. They are the most likely to sell to magazines... although many men's magazines are shooting their own content these days."

George of A Images Achieves a Milestone – 501 OMP Showcases

Showcases are a unique feature of One Model Place, and every model and member has at one point coveted one of the special tags on their photos to signify exceptional artistry, creativity, or technical prowess.

While it still remains a mystery how exactly OMP Showcases are awarded, one photographer seems to have cracked the code -- George OMP Member #4921

George has shot images over 20 years on a casual basis, but got more involved in photography a decade ago. Since joining the site in 2001, George has consistently uploaded incredible imagery and has been rewarded for it. As of this week, he has reached a plateau that few if any have attained – George has 501 Showcases out of 501 images. Looking at the Showcase section on his page is like visiting an art gallery filled with provocative, evocative nude portraits and compelling close-ups.

His interest in the photographic arts came from an unlikely source. “Many years ago, I was chatting with my girlfriend’s father, and we discussed his passion for photography. He noticed I had an interest, so he proceeded to retrieve his favorite camera, a Nikon F. He showed me all the settings, told me what to consider when shooting, and provided sample images. He then gave me an old rangefinder camera -- I think it was a 35mm Petri -- and I was forever hooked! I started to shoot everything: friends, buildings, sports events. My girlfriend was my first female shoot – I hope she never reads this!”

Subsequently, school and varies jobs occupied his time, but George continued to shoot, and effortlessly making the transition from shooting friends to professional models.”

He first discovered and signed up for One Model Place back in 2001. “I had just completed a shoot and while looking through the images, I was told I should consider posting some of my photos on some of the popular model websites. She thought my images looked good, and said it would be fun and that I would receive some valuable comments. When I asked which site to join, she recommended One Model Place. Initially, I was hesitant, but I decided to post some shots, and ever since I stayed with OMP. “

While George still considers photography more of a hobby than a career, he feels that OMP has given him the opportunity to meet some wonderful models and photographers. “The models, in particular, have helped me improve my photo skills and shape my image style. Actually, my image success is due solely to their creative talents and supportive efforts.”

He recalls getting his first Showcase image and his record-breaking 501st. “In the beginning, I just posted some basis fine art photos on One Model Place, and one day I noticed the Showcase designation next to one of my images. I really paid no attention to it until, while surfing the site, a photographer or model commented on the Showcase concept. So I again checked out my page and saw the designation. I was pleased, and thought it was real cool! In fact, it was a shot of the model who had suggested I post on OMP.

George wanted to full circle when selecting which image to upload for his potential portfolio-topping 501st photo. “Regarding my last Showcase image, I posted another image of the same model. I thought I would be nice to start and close with her images, but the OMP folks did not go for it. I then decided to do something a little different (I usually shoot fine art nudes/glamour) using available light in a shower. I was lucky because the model I wanted to shoot was available. She was perfect. I really had nothing to do with the shot, she did it all -- the pose, movement, emotion. I just stood there, pointed the camera, and shot. The result was Showcase number 501.”

Choosing which OMP models he has enjoyed working with the most proves to be difficult for George, who has had so many amazing muses over the years. “Answering this question is difficult. Each model contributes something different and meaningful, and I try to enhance the effect by showing the beauty/mood/emotion the model projects. Probably my OMP profile speaks for itself. There are many images posted for just a handful of models. Obviously, those images tell the story. If you view the profile you can readily see which models have impacted my image style the most. In fact, I have enjoyed working with all of the OMP models posted in my profile.

“But I will mention one, Dorothy OMP Model #2720 . I have been shooting with her continually over 7 years, and every time the results are outstanding -- mainly due to her efforts. Not only is she a great model, she is also a wonderful person who brings something very special to the process. She has also introduced me to several other wonderful models who have contributed immensely to my imagery. Honestly, I could not have reached the 501 mark without her assistance.”

He offers some insightful words of advice for photographers who are just starting out. “Carefully study the beauty surrounding us all. Examine various lighting situations. Listen to what your models have to say -- I find letting them express themselves works best. Try not to compromise your objectives. Listen to constructive criticism and adjust accordingly. Practice, practice, practice. And most importantly be professional…or else you will never work with quality models.”

The Staten Island-based photographer admits that even he does not know the secret formula to getting a Showcase image on OMP. “I haven’t a clue! I guess, it is the one image which, when viewed, causes nearly everyone to reflect and think ‘Damn, I wish I took that shot!’”

George wants to express his gratitude to the staff and administrators of One Model Place for supporting and encouraging both him and his work over the years. But now that his portfolio is completely filled, he is trying to figure out what his next step is. “I would like to thank OMP for giving me the forum to display my images and enabling me to interact with some really great photographers/models. However, I am not sure as to what to do now!”

Missouri Photographer Jason Ruark Strives for High-End Glamour Success

Jason Ruark of Silver Dreams (OMP Member #91114) has worked as a photographer for the last five years. He got his start in photography as a favor to a friend. "I knew a model who was not receiving good treatment by agencies or photographers. As a favor, I shot some images of her for a job submission. The images that were submitted allowed the model to obtain the job. She was ecstatic and asked me if I would do all of her future shoots! So I jumped in with out any knowledge of the business and taught myself not only photography and how to be an effective agent."

His favorite style of shooting is high-end glamour. "I feel there is an art to taking a picture that leaves your audience captivated and desiring more. I believe that any image that is sexy, provocative, suggestive, and alluring -- while retaining class and morality -- is an awesome image. You give them just enough to wonder if they are going to see more in the next image or just enough to keep them coming back for more while not sacrificing your morality."

Jason points out that since each model is different, they usually have different ideas on what is artistic or how they look in a
photo. "The number one key to a good image is a comfortable model. If the model is not comfortable in her outfit or her settings, you're not going to get a good image. I spend at least 30 minutes with a model in a public area where she can ask any questions or concerns he or she has. I also give them information about me, and give them a feel for what I look for and how I work. Essentially I break the ice and get acquainted with them on more of a personal level."

The Missouri resident relates that the inspiration behind his work are the smiles and excitement his clients gets from the images he takes. "I thrive to see everyone happy with the end result -- the joy of knowing that my clients or subjects or fans loves a particular image, and the fact that I can produce something for someone that not everyone else can. And I am always striving to be better, I want to be a well known magazine photographer or free lance publication photographer. Either way I want to be a household name in the international industry."

Jason discovered One Model Place through one of the models he worked with. "OMP is the largest online model community and has been a great resource for networking. The OMP email system makes contacting a model or client very easy and productive. The tools that are available with a Platinum Account makes my job so much easier. Anyone who is not a OMP member simply is cheating themselves out of a efficient tool that would better their carrer as either a photographer or a model."

To Jason, all the models he has worked with are all are unique and special in their own way. "Each model has a certain style that makes them the model they are. I have a lot of respect for the models I work with, for some people who look at this industry its appears to be a easy job or profession, but it's harder than it looks and there are a lot of behind the scenes preparations that many people do not see or even know about. I have a lot of respect for anyone who models, they really work hard."

His advice to beginning photographer is simple and straightforward. "Do what you love. Do not try to copy or mimic other photographers. Create your own style, that way you can express yourself as an artist. You can, however, find someone’s work you like and ask them for any helpful information from them that will help you. Don’t spend money on classes that are overpriced -- use that money to buy equipment!"

Hot Model of the Day Lexi Lights Up the Chicago Modeling Scene

Lexi (OMP Model #332608) has only been posing for photos for about two years, but once you see her portfolio, you know you are looking at a seasoned professional with presence and poise.

The tall, intense teen got her start in modeling while accompanying a friend to a photo shoot in her hometown of Chicago. The photographer her friend was shooting with is now Lexi's manager, John Kramer of JLK Images (OMP Member #8452).

Being a model in Chicago is a lot of fun, Lexi relates."There are so many amazing photographers that I have worked with, and it seems like there are an endless amount of them because I am always meeting new ones in the city. I say the same thing about Chicago models. There are some gorgeous women in Chicago, which only makes you keep yourself in better shape because the competition is so fierce!"

Lexi describes herself as very outgoing and versatile. "I love trying out new concepts and modeling is definitely a great way of expressing yourself. IÂ like doing artistic nudes. I have always been comfortable with my body and a big fan of art so it came pretty naturally to me. I think women's bodies are sexy, I love the curves and the art of it. I also really enjoy new ideas that are a little bit more edgy."

She does point out that there are some challenges to shooting nudes. "Making them look classy or artsy without looking trashy/porn-like can be difficult. That may be what some people go for, but my particular taste is more artistic."

Her penchant for doing nudes led her to getting noticed by the staff at Playboy."I submitted photos to Playboy, and they invited me to schedule an appointment for the Chicago casting. After the casting I was really nervous because they were only choosing 10 girls to be in the top group out of the hundreds that showed up. So I was so relieved when I got the email that my pictures were going to be featured on their Cyber Club. As of right now, Playboy is still traveling the country doing other castings, but I am confident that great things will come from being in the Chicago Top 10."

One Model Place has been a fan of Lexi's since she joined the site, and according to her, the feeling is mutual. "OMP was the first -- and best -- modeling site that I signed up with. My manager had a profile and so did every other model I came across. So I checked it out and loved it. Everything was so easy and fun on the site!"

OMP has helped Lexi promote her career in many ways. "I have booked so many jobs through OMP. The way the site is set up makes it so easy for photographer's to check me out, and for me to visit their profiles. I love the direct messages that get sent to my email. It is so convenient!"

The beautiful blond offers some advice for models just starting out in the business. "I would tell beginning models to definitely start a page with OMP. You can join for free, but eventually you're going to want at least a Silver Level membership. You come up in a lot more searches, and you can add more photos of yourself, which is what people are going to want to see before they book you!"

As for models who want to shoot nudes, Lexi encourages them to go for it. "A woman's body is really a beautiful thing, and it's nothing to be ashamed of. If you are comfortable with yourself and with taking off your clothes, then make sure you do it the way you want to!"

Lexi's future goals as a model are an indication that she is serious about making a name for herself in the industry. "My current project is working my way into Playboy and soon after that I would like to book some high fashion runway assignments. I think one benefit of being a model is traveling, so I'm hoping to take advantage of that by trying to do some more of it this year. Modeling is a lot of fun for me and it is something that I am going to keep striving to be better at until it's no longer fun for me, which I don't see happening anytime soon!"

Carlotta is the OMP Hot Model of the Day!

Having worked in the industry for the past six years, Carlotta (OMP Model #149902) is an experienced model who instantly transforms anyone’s images into works of art. Her unique diversity allows her to work in a variety of styles and fit into many different categories.

“I have modeled for many genres of work -- fine art, glamour, beauty, lingerie, even fetish! I think I would call myself an erotic model because I seem to present a hint of sexuality in all of my images, no matter how reserved I may try to be. My favorite genre to model for is fine art nudes because I feel that it is my most natural state, and I achieve a sense of satisfaction from knowing I am inspiring someone to create true art.”

Fans of Carlotta can meet the model at Glamourcon, an industry convention that will be held in Chicago on August 15-16 and Los Angeles on Nov. 14-15. “I have attended the Chicago Glamourcon every year since I made it into the pages of Playboy. I find it is a great way to become connected with fans, and make contacts within the industry.” For more details, visit www.glamourcon.com.

The Florida resident was posing for some local artists and friends involved in the arts when she decided to take her hobby to the next level. “A photographer and a model both mentioned I should check out OneModelPlace.com. The site helped launch me from an amateur to a well-known working model.”

Promoting herself on OMP has been very helpful to Carlotta’s success. “Within 24 hours of signing up, I was literally overwhelmed with emails, and then a career blossomed from there! The travel notices on the site help me find work when I'm on the road, the atmosphere is overall very professional, and the contacts I have made with the people on the site are endless.”

Her favorite assignments include being published in Playboy Magazine. “I've been fortunate enough to shoot many times for Playboy. They are a wonderful company. I think I am most proud of getting the cover of a book called 'My Favorite Model,' as it features over 40 amazing models. To be chosen for the cover is just incredibly flattering.”

It seems like everything in Carlotta’s life revolves around photoshoots. “To prepare, I get my nails done, my hair done, and look for new wardrobe. The whole process of being prepared takes weeks! I don't generally work locally, so I have to schedule flights, book hotels, rent cars -- it’s a huge ordea. Showing up and modeling is the easy part!”

Well, not that easy. Some of the positions Carlotta finds herself in are more difficult that they appear. “I always have to make sure my facial expressions correspond well with my body positioning. Sometimes a pose can really hurt, and you have to be aware that your face still needs to look at ease.”

She does feel that the good parts of modeling outweigh the bad for the most part. “I get to travel, meet amazing artists from all over the world, and the money doesn't hurt either! The whole process is challenging, though! Being away from home for weeks at a time, pushing your body into wild yoga poses, being sore frequently. Although the job seems glamorous, there is a lot of work involved!”

Her advice for models just starting out includes “being professional, honoring your commitments, and showing up on time.”

Fashion Photographer Christopher Makris Leaves a Lasting Impression

Christopher Makris (OMP Member #4773) has worked as a professional photographer for over 25 years, primarily in the fields of fashion, beauty, and travel. The native of Greece has extensive experience collaborating with high fashion models, world-renowned designers, and top makeup artists and stylists. Now living in the South Florida area, he divides his time between editorial shoots, runway shows, live concerts, and public events. To see Christopher’s online portfolio, visit www.onemodelplace.com/cmfoto.

Photography is a full-time job for Christopher. “My primary focus these days is fashion and beauty. I get my inspiration mainly from female beauty combined with gorgeous garments and amazing lighting.” Christopher’s recent projects include magazine and newspaper assignments as well as serving as lead photographer for a Miami charity event that featured Agent Provocateur lingerie and celebrities as runway models.

Being focused is one mark of a great photographer, according to Christopher. “You really need to be good at focusing on all the details that go into a photo shoot. For beginning photographers my advice is to simply focus on whatever style you are best at, and go for it!” Christopher feels the main challenge photographers face these days is to satisfy the clients’ needs.

Christopher’s definition of the perfect model is “someone who has the height and beauty to stand out in the industry.” He suggests that models getting started in the industry learn what styles of modeling suit them best. “Depending on your physique and facial features, it is important for beginning models to determine which type of modeling they are right for, whether it be runway, print, fashion, or glamour bookings.”

The first camera Christopher used was a Minolta, but nowadays he works exclusively with Nikon equipment. “I am not a diehard fan of any particular brand, because I feel that it is not the camera that gets a great image, but the photographer.”

Christopher relates a memorable experience that he had during a runway show. “Photographers were permitted to be up on the runway shooting, however, when I got up there the runway collapsed and I fell through to the floor. Everyone saw me and people were taking pictures of me instead of the models!”

Autumn Wishes You a Happy, Sexy Summer!

Autumn (OMP Model #295792) has been modeling for two years, and she got her start on One Model Place. “I hadn't done any real modeling until I joined OMP. Once I set up my portfolio, local photographers wrote me wanting to set up shoots, so I just went for it and found out it's something I love to do. I was inspired to try to make great images when I saw the photographers' pages and other models' amazing portfolios, and I'm still trying!”

In addition to fashion and beauty, this New Haven, Connecticut resident has a penchant for artistic nudes. “One of Autumn’s favorite things about nude modeling is it allows her to work with new and creative people and getting to try new things. I also love being nude in nature -- it's liberating!”

Autumn has no specific future goals as a model, but she definitely has a positive outlook. “I'm just seeing where it takes me and having fun along the way.” She does, however, have some suggestions for other young models starting out. “Modeling is all about attitude, no matter who you are. So just have fun, relax, experiment, and be safe.”

You can also check out Autumn on her personal website www.autumnmodel.com.

Isabella is Today's Hot Model

Isabella (OMP Model #312637) is a breath of fresh air on a hot summer day -- gorgeous as all get out but also down-to-earth and accessible. She makes a great new addition to our OMP Hot Model of the Day gallery.

This New York-based beauty has been modeling since she was 18 years old. She relates, "I really enjoy modeling because I am a very artistic person. My favorite photographers are creative, intuitive, and out of the ordinary. I lean towards images that are eye-catching instead of the ones you could see any day."

Her nationality is 1/2 Native American (Seneca tribe) and 1/2 German, and she calls herself a "true chameleon. I can pull of any hair color, and clothing style, and any style of modeling. If I haven't tried a style before, I will give 110% effort to pull it off. If you have any ideas of something new for me to try, please let me know, because I get tired of repeating similar styles. I'm always looking for ways to change my look and style to create a truly diverse portfolio."

Jannah is OMP's Hot Model of the Day

Just Jannah (OMP Model #74943) is more than just a pretty girl -- she is an accomplished model who has been modeling since she was 18. She would have started earlier, but she didn’t have access to One Model Place before then. “My mother finally got a computer in our house when I turned 18, and I started researching modeling information because it was something I had always wanted to pursue. That’s when I found OMP and it all began.”

This Texas beauty has in a short time filled her resume with many impressive credits, including Playboy and Mystique Magazine. “I am very into what I do. It's a passion, a hobby, and an enjoyment -- not a job! There is nothing like two creative spirits coming together to create something beautiful.”

She has a full checklist when preparing for photo shoots and assignments. “I do everything from tanning to hair, nails, wardrobe, make-up, exercise, diet… you name it!”

Jannah relates that the modeling lifestyle does come with its share of rewards and challenges. “The rewards include a lot of traveling -- usually I don't even get to unpack before I'm headed somewhere else! Also the awesome images that are created, and getting to meet some really cool people. But there are also some challenges, including lonely nights in hotel rooms away from your family.”

Speaking of family, Jannah is a working mom with two young children. “It has definitely been challenging starting a family so young in the middle of my dream. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I have the best of both worlds, and not too many can say the same!”

As for advice for models just starting out, Jannah offers, “Make sure it's something you really want because it will take a dedication like no other. You must live and breathe this industry, or you will lose your chance to a girl who will.”

Jannah is grateful to One Model Place for helped her get where she is at, “OMP is mega! Everything started here. One word – networking!”

Inspirational Art Model Anne is a Muse to Many

Ohio resident Anne (OMP Model #334021) has only been modeling a year and a half, but you couldn't tell from her amazing portfolio of images. Her lovely look -- as seen in the amazing photo by Tom deLombarde of Point Source Photography (OMP Member #7197) -- makes her the muse of choice for artistically-inclined photographers.

This willowy brunette got her start on One Model Place after being told many times that she could be a model. "I did a little research, found OMP, posted some self-taken pics, and stared getting jobs. I got my first shoot from One Model Place, so OMP was definitely the jumpstart of my career!"

While she admits that she really doesn't think of herself as a model, others in the industry would tend to disagree. "I think I'm pretty versatile and open-minded. I tend to shoot alot of artistic nude and glamour nude shoots. And I've worked with a lot of wonderful photographers!"

Anne likes to prepare for a photo shoot using relaxation methods. "I really just try to relax. I don't have to mentally prepare or anything like that. I eat light, make sure I have some ideas in mind, and just relax." During shoots, she concentrates on the concept and emotion of each shot, as well as body and hand placement.

Her advice for models just starting out is very specific. "Have a clear vision of what types of images you won't shoot, and don't be coerced into anything you're not comfortable with. Check references! And don't be a diva! Remember, you're a new model... so be open to shooting TFP with decent photographers and working at building your portfolio. Don't expect to get paid right away."

She points out the rewards and challenges of modeling. "One of the rewards is definitely producing great images. Being able to be creative and collaborate with amazing artists. The challenges include the long hours that are sometimes required... being away from my son and husband when I travel is difficult."

Model Marisa is a True Teen Talent

Marisa aka GreenEyesDiva (OMP Model #321459) is a 16-year-old model from Florida. Modeling for over three years, she has a wide range of experience in the industry.

While Marisa’s main focus is on commercial and fashion assignments, she has recently branched out to more creative ventures. “One of my recent photo shoots was in the OMP Studio in Fort Lauderdale. I got to wear some crazy outfits -- it was the best time I have had on a shoot.”

She travels a lot for her career, both in and out of state. “I have worked in California with some amazing photographers that gave me some amazing photos. I have also shoot in Georgia and all over Florida.”

This talented teen decided to try modeling after seeing her sister become successful at it, “I love the process of taking pictures and preparing for shoots. I just love being in front of the camera.”

She is grateful to One Model Place for helping her to get more images for her portfolio, and allowing her to not only meet wonderful photographers and agents but also to make some good friends in the industry.

Citing Brooke Shields as a role model, Marisa offers some of her own advice for models who are just starting out, “I would tell new models to just be yourself and work hard and never give up on your dreams.”

Tennessee Teen Karina Ashley Focuses On Her Modeling Goals

Karina Ashley (OMP Model #307377) has been modeling for two years, and can't imagine doing anything else.

She prefers photo assignments where there is a challenge involved. “My favorite shoots are the ones that are different. I am definitely a bit of a risk taker. I had a shoot in late March and I was so ready to shoot outside, so we went to a natural springs and took bathing suit shots. Everyone of course was saying it was too cold -- it was only about 55 degrees outside – but I did not care, I got in anyway! We got some awesome images and even got a showcase on one of them. So it was worth it to me to do the not-so-pleasant shoot sometimes, if you end up producing an image that shows your determination.”

The Tennessee teen relates that One Model Place has helped her showcase her work and develop as a model. “I have gotten to meet some amazing models and photographers through OMP as well.”

Karina has gotten a lot of recognition from top agencies such as Ford and Ikon, as well as several other companies. Her future goals in modeling are to pursue editorial assignments and walk the runways for top designers in New York and Milan.

Here are Karina’s excellent suggestions for other young models trying to break into the business. “My advice to other young models is stay focused on your goals. Take care of your body, skin, and hair. Practice your posing. Network and use OMP to get out there and meet new photographers and models. Get as much time in front of the camera as you can -- that is where you will learn the most.”

She has a few final optimistic observations. “Have confidence in yourself! Modeling is way more than a beautiful face -- it is about showing your personality. And remember -- OMP makes it very easy to network, leave comments, and get the photographers to notice you.”

OMP Members We Have Lost: Robert Warren

It is with deep regret that One Model Place announces the passing of several of its members. We will be honoring their memories in the weeks to come.

Robert Warren (OMP Member #122084) of Bellewood Studio in Allentown, PA was born in 1944 and passed away last month. He is remembered by his friends as a brave Marine, a high school teacher, and photographer for over 30 years. Bob owned a photography studio and a photo store in NJ, where he worked with local magazines and enjoyed auto racetrack photography.

For the last five years, Bob moved to other photography styles and started to shoot models and fashion photography. He enjoyed going on the St. Thomas Islands for different modeling workshops or on his own shoots with different models. His friend Gerald Patenaude recalls, "Bob's heart problems never stopped him from what he enjoyed the most -- photography was his medicine. He tried a heart transplant, which was unsuccessful. Thank you OMP for allowing us to continue his work and take care of his online portfolio. He will be deeply missed."

According to Gerald, Bellewood Studio will continue to exist as a promise to Bob. For all the models who have worked with Bob, or started portfolios and have questions, send an email to bellewoodstudio@gmail.com.

OMP members can revisit Bob's portfolio and appreciate his artistry: OMP Member #122084

Makeup Artist Cindy Cohen Works Her Magic for Maxim

Makeup Artist Cindy Cohen Works Her Magic for Maxim

Cindy Cohen
(OMP Member #43096)
has been perfecting the art of makeup design for the past 20 years. She got her start in the business by working in a department store on Long Island in New York, demonstrating techniques to customers. Her efforts paid off recently when her work was featured on the cover of Maxim Magazine Spanish Edition.

She first joined OneModelPlace.com in 2003, after photographer she was shooting with introduced her to the site. Since then, she has been able to display her work on OMP to professional commercial photographers who would in turn contact her about hiring her for assignments.

In addition to Maxim, Cindy’s other clients have included Harley Davidson and Simply the Best magazine.

She points out the differences between doing makeup for magazine shoots and fashion shows. “The makeup for the camera is more exact because it is a still shot. A runway show is live and the models are constantly moving, so the makeup doesn't have to be as exact, because the naked eye is not exact.”

Cindy has some advice for people interested in makeup careers. “Pick the type of makeup you want to excel in, and the medium, and become an expert in those areas. I chose photographic makeup and I excel in clean beauty.”

She also has an inspiring message for anyone in the arts. “To be good at anything. you have to really love what you do and have a passion for the work.”

Luana Sizzles as OMP's Hot Model of the Day

Luana OMP Model #155259 is a marvelous model originally from Hawaii who currently resides in Southern California. This petite powerhouse has been modeling professionally for five years, ever since she turned 18, and is a fan favorite in the glamour photography industry.

She got her start as a model back in Hawaii. "I was shooting with local photographers, trying to build my portfolio and make some money. One Model Place was there since the beginning of my career, and I booked a lot of work just by posting images on my profile and responding to some of the modeling inquiries coming in. Then I met David of ModFXModels.com and started my own website, which allowed me to build a fanbase."

One of the busiest working models in the business, Luana reveals some of her favorite modeling assignments. "Modeling for Mystique Magazine has been my favorite assignment by far. They have flown me out to exotic places such as Tahiti, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Kauai. I've always enjoyed being in front of Mark Daughn's camera because he is just a genius when it comes to bringing out the best in models, and his lighting is impeccable. Shooting for Playboy also helped me gain recognition in the glamour industry."

Playboy came calling on Luana after seeing her on One Model Place. "OMP was the largest model networking site back when I started, and it's still the largest today. I actually booked my Playboy shoot from OMP! There are many industry professionals here, so being active in the online community really puts your face out there."

Luana offers some great advice for other models who want to get their careers jump-started. "Figure out what type of modeling you are most interested in. Ask yourself what styles are you best suited for. Find your strengths, and then focus on highlighting them. It's important to showcase your special unique qualities. Of course, you also want to show your versatility as a model. Finally, be sure to think over your decisions carefully and remember to give yourself a little reality check once in a while."
